Sites of Discovery: Photographs from the Lewis and Clark Trail

An exhibition of twenty-four panoramic color photographs made along the trail used by Lewis and Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase in 1803-06.  The combination of photographs with excerpts from the journals of Lewis and Clark creates a unique contemporary document, establishing a narrative spanning two hundred years of change along the route.  Rather than seeking to depict a romantic, unblemished wilderness, Phelps’ images embrace the natural and social landscape of the contemporary American West recording sites where history, nature, and modern-day civilization coexist.

An internationally known award-winning landscape photographer with extensive exhibition, publishing, and teaching experience, Phelps conceived the Sites of Discovery project in recognition of the opportunity inherent in the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial commemoration.  He began the project in 1996, and completed the photographs in 2002.  Phelps traveled the trail extensively capturing the sites at approximately the same time of the year the Corps of Discovery experienced them, and in many cases, under similar weather conditions.
