Camp Disappointment, Glacier County, Montana, August 9, 1997

[View: west/northwest.  48º 39’ 52” N — 112º 48’ 20” W]

[Lewis]                                                                                Friday July 25th 1806.

. . .I determined that if tomorrow continued cloudy to set out as I now begin to be apprehensive that I shall not reach the United States within this season unless I make every exertion in my power. . .which I shall do with much reluctance without having obtained the necessary data to establish it’s longitude-as if the fates were against me my chronometer from some unknown cause stoped today, when I set her to going she went as usual.

[Lewis]                                                                             Saturday July 26th 1806.

The morning was cloudy and continued to rain as usual, tho’ the cloud seemed    somewhat thiner.  I therefore posponed seting out untill 9 A.M. in the hope that it would clear off but finding the contrary result I had the horses caught and we set out biding a lasting adieu to this place which I now call camp disappointment. . .
